Terms of use
Last updated 2026-10-22. By using this site you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site.
What this site is
BestOfGit is an independent, non-commercial project that ranks public repositories by how much their star count grew, and adds a few measurements that help you judge a project before you spend time on it. It reads the public GitHub API and it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by GitHub, Inc. The name GitHub and its logo belong to GitHub.
The source code is available under the MIT license at github.com/punchkub147/bestofgit. The license covers the code only. See NOTICE.md for what belongs to whom.
What you may do
- Browse, search, and link to any page. No account is needed and nothing is paywalled.
- Use the public API (
/api/repos,/api/repos/{owner}/{name}and/api/collections) for the same data the site loads, in personal projects, research, or a small number of requests from your own tool. - Quote numbers from this site with attribution and a link back to the page you took them from, because every number here has a window and a sample size attached to it.
What you may not do
- Do not scrape this site or the API endpoints at a volume that degrades it for others, and do not deliberately work around the caching or the rate limits in front of them. The API allows 120 requests per minute per caller; over that it answers 429 with a
retry-afterheader. The data is a thin layer over the GitHub API: fetch it from GitHub directly if you need bulk data, and respect GitHub's own limits when you do. - Do not present this site's output as GitHub's, and do not use the GitHub name or logo in a way that suggests GitHub endorses you.
- Do not use the site to harass repository owners or to misrepresent a project.
- Do not attempt to break the site's security or reach data that is not published here.
The data, and what we promise about it
Repository names, descriptions, licenses, star counts and similar fields come from GitHub and belong to the repository owners and to GitHub. The derived numbers (growth, rankings, scores, medians) are computed by this project from that data.
Those derived numbers are estimates of what was sampled, and they say so. Star counts are sampled once a day rather than watched continuously; the pipeline runs every six hours, so a number can be hours old and the site says when it is. Where a measurement is missing (too few merged pull requests, a window that has not filled up yet), the site shows nothing rather than a zero. Automatic classification (collections, one-line summaries) is generated by a language model and can be wrong. We do not warrant that any of it is accurate, complete, or suitable for any particular purpose.
The default views leave out repositories that a display rule excludes (archived, forks, without a license, or not pushed in 90 days), plus anything the classifier judged not to be a software project. Every one of them is still tracked, and listed with its reason.
Corrections and opt-out (repository owners)
If you own a repository listed here and you want a field corrected, or you want the project not to be listed at all, say so through a GitHub issue or a direct message to @punchkub147. We will look at the request, tell you what we decided, and remove the repository from the rankings and the pages of this site if you ask us to. Nothing on this site is a statement about your project's quality; it exists to help people find it.
Availability, and limits of liability
The site is provided "as is" and "as available", with no service level: it may be slow, wrong, incomplete, or down, and it may change or be discontinued at any time. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of the site, including decisions made on the basis of the numbers shown. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under mandatory law, and nothing here is legal, financial, or professional advice.
Links to other sites
Pages here link out to github.com and to project documents hosted elsewhere. Those sites are governed by their own terms, not by these.
Changes
These terms may change; the date at the top is when they last did. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the new version. Material changes to what we do with data would also be reflected on the privacy page.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Thailand, and its courts have jurisdiction over a dispute about them. Nothing here removes a right that the law where you live gives you and does not allow to be given up.
