Real data starts 22 Sep 2026: that is the first day trending and star snapshots exist, and nothing on this page claims accuracy before it.
Also part of this work: topics moving before their repositories trend and where we were wrong.

What each rule means
- Accelerating
- gained at least 200 stars in the last 7 days, at least 5× its own average week over the previous 26 weeks (weeks with no star history are ignored, and the average is floored at 10 stars/week so a repository that was flat does not divide by zero), with at least 8 weeks of history, and it has never appeared on GitHub Trending.
- First mover
- was mentioned in a Hacker News thread or Reddit post in the last 7 days and has never appeared on GitHub Trending.
How this page has done so far
Every flag raised is counted, and only after its 14-day window elapses.
- Right 17
- Wrong 155
- Not decided 336
Outcomes that count as right: trending inside the window (6) or the top 100 of our own 7-day ranking (11). Flags that were already on GitHub Trending before we raised them: 22, counted as wrong.

Who came first: the web or Trending
Two dates per repository: the day a thread was posted, and the first day Trending showed it while we were watching.
- Thread came first
- 715of 3.4k seen on Trending
- Median gap
- 23 daysthread to Trending
- Flag to Trending
- 10 daysover 6 flags that reached Trending
- Nothing to measure
- 2.7kno thread, a thread after Trending, or one older than the window
How these two dates are counted, and the cases they leave out
Threads posted after the Trending day are not counted, and neither are threads more than 90 days older than it: those two dates are not the same story. Nothing to measure = 1.9k with no thread at all, with threads only after Trending, whose last thread is older than days.
